Monarchs Favorite Drink

Jen A, Nickita W, Tori K

Our class wanted to see if monarchs preferred sugar water, Gatorade, Propel, and Kool-Aid.  Each table had one male and one female in a container with the various drinks. We watched them and recorded if they landed and if they ate. Our results were most of the butterflies stayed at the top of the cage except for one butterfly that landed for three seconds on the Propel. It did not eat anything. Our class meets at 7:50a.m. and we are wondering if that is too early for butterflies to eat. Additionally, we used clear liquids on white cotton balls so we wonder if the butterflies would have reacted better to colored juices. Next time we would like to test the butterflies at a different time of day and using colorful juices.
