Digging Up Invertebrate Biodiversity in a Butterfly Garden
Bridget B, Noah L, Lilli M, Grace D, Rachel L, Micah H
Will the location of soil samples taken from a butterfly garden affect the biodiversity of invertebrates? We dug soil samples from 20 different places in our school butterfly garden. We observed the type of plants and amount of sunshine at each location. We placed the soil samples in a Berlese funnel, placed it under lights and waited for the invertebrates to crawl away from the light into a jar. Then we measured the number and variety of invertebrates found in each of the samples. We compared locations and nearby plants.
