Effect of Light vs Dark on the Weight of Monarch Larvae

We started with 8 monarch larva in their 4th and 5th instar and separated them into 2 groups: light (control) and dark (experiment). We put the experiment into the closet and the control group in the grow lab. We found that the monarchs in the dark weighed more than the monarchs in the light. The average weight in the dark dramatically dropped because of the loss of the largest of the monarchs. Some uncertainties we have about our conclusion are:  Weight was measured only to the nearest hundredth of a gram. The light container was closer to the room heater while the dark one was in the cold closet.  The data for the last day was based on the sole surviving larva in each group; it differs from the trend based on the averaged data for the first two days. Two new things I learned are:

Monarch Life Cycle

Our group made a three piece 3-D model. It consists of one monarch larvae, one pupa, and one adult monarch butterfly. There are 5 larvae instars and we decided to make a model of one in the 5th instar because it would be most developed. The larvae is made up of felt, styrofoam balls, and pipe cleaners. During the pupa stage the caterpillar goes from larvae to butterfly. Our pupa is made out of styrofoam balls, tissue paper, and clear paper. The butterfly is the adult stage of a monarchs life. The butterfly we made is made out of styrofoam balls, paper, cardboard, pipe cleaners, and long wooden toothpicks. We labeled major parts of the larvae and the butterfly.
