Charged Running: What would be the most effective way to charge a phone’s battery while running?

Miles F

In 2017, almost 60 million people located in the U.S participated in running related events (statista.com, n.d.). The question is: What would be the most effective way to charge a phone’s battery while running? The hypothesis is: If comparing an electromagnetic generator and solar panels, the solar panels will charge a device faster. An electromagnetic generator was created by wrapping copper wire around a cardboard paper towel tube. Seven 30mm x 3mm neodymium magnets were then put into the tube. A digital multimeter was connected to the wire to measure the output of the voltage when the magnets oscillate in the tube. This device was attached to the runner’s calf. Solar panels were arranged in a grid and placed on the runner’s back. Results pending.

Cosmetic Conundrum: What effect does DISC Assessment personality traits and recycling education have on middle school student recycling behavior?

Rowan R

Disposal of personal care products are now the primary cause of fresh water contamination (Ecolife, 2011). The question was: What effect do DISC Assessment personality traits and recycling education have on middle school student behavior? The hypothesis was: If students are educated on the negative effects of cosmetic trash and how to recycle them, then they will be more likely to recycle their cosmetics and the compliance DISC personality type will be more likely to recycle. Personal care product recycling bins were put in the boys and girls locker rooms. A survey and educational video were created asking about recycling habits and students' individual DISC personality scores. A tally of the types of personal care products recycled was recorded and compared for each location.

Dog Dilemma: What effect does dog gender have on training behaviors?

Emmie D

“If you want a good dog, get a male. If you want a great dog, get a female and cross your fingers” (McConnell, 2009, ?1) That old saying has been passed down through generations for many breeds, but does it matter if a dog is male or female? The question was: What effect does dog gender have on training behaviors? The hypothesis was: If dog gender is evaluated, then female dogs will be easier to train. An online survey will be made and given to middle school students and adults in a school. They will be asked questions about dog training behaviors. For example: Time to learn different behaviors (sitting, potting training, and coming when called). Results pending.

Gobbling Gecko: What effect does food nutritional value (fat vs. protein) have on gecko eating response time?

Macie M, Alexa S

Leopard geckos are not social animals and communicate through their body movement (Chewy, 2018). They usually eat live insects such as crickets and mealworms (Bearded dragon, 2018). The questions is: What effect does food nutritional value (fat vs. protein) have on gecko eating response time? The hypothesis is: If geckos are offered a food higher in protein (cricket) vs. fat (mealworm), then they will choose the cricket over the mealworm. A five year old Leopard gecko was used for this study. The average male gecko lives 10-20 years. The gecko was offered either live meal worms or crickets. The eating response time was recorded in seconds and behaviors were noted. Results pending.

Handedness: What effect does handedness have on reaction time?

Zachary L

About ten percent of individuals are left-handed. Men are more likely to be left-handed than women. Seventy to eighty percent of the world’s population is right-handed (Mwaniki, 2018). My question is: What effect does handedness have on reaction time? I hypothesize that if handedness is measured, then right handed people will have better reaction time than left handed and ambidextrous. Each participant will answer questions about their handedness, age, and gender. They will then participate in a computer-based test that measures their reaction time. In a random order, they will: use their dominant hand, their non dominant, and rotate hands with each trial to match a given color with the correct option from a grid of choices. Results pending.

Home vs. Hospital: What effect does gender and birth type used have on perception of birthing safety?

Aaliyah F

Becoming a parent is a wonderful thing. Along with the baby carriage comes a lot of important decision making, including how and where to give birth (Kicinski-McCoy, 2016). The question is: What effect does gender and birth type used have on perception of birthing safety? The hypotheses is: If gender and the type of birthing used are examined, then males will think the hospital is safer than females and if a person has a certain birthing type used they will think that is the safest route. A survey was given to students and teachers asking them what type of birthing method they used and to rate how safe four different methods were (home, hospital with spinal block, hospital no spinal block, and C-section).

Magical Molecules: How sweet is it: What effect do artificial sweeteners have on probiotic bacteria growth?

Aili B

Many people don't know that artificial sweetness in foods may come at a health cost (Scientific America, 2017). The question is: What effect does the artificial sweetener (aspartame) have on probiotic bacteria growth? The hypothesis is: If the normal flora of the small intestine are treated with aspartame, then the probiotics ability to metabolize glucose would be negatively affected. One tablet of probiotic bacteria was added to one liter of distilled water along with five replicates. Separately, to one set of replicates, one gram of aspartame was added, and to another set one gram of sugar was added. There was a control set with only probiotics added, and one with only water. Results Pending.

Monarch Movement: What effect does fly time or no fly time have on monarch butterfly behavior?

It turns out that many captive-bred monarchs carry diseases, most notably a monarch-killing parasite called Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. Therefore releasing many captive monarch butterflies could be a problem. Yet, allowing them fly time in an inside facility may improve their health in captivity (Platt, 2015). For seven days a monarch butterfly was allowed 15 minutes of fly time in a large room and seven days of no fly time. How active the butterfly was recorded within fifteen minutes after flying at the same time of day. When no fly time was allowed for flying behavior was noted at the same time of the day using a scale of one to five (five meaning very active). Behaviors will be observed and recorded.

Road Rush: What effect does weather and runoff have on Spring Creek's water quality?

Charlotte R

Minnesota's main pollutant in rivers and streams is sediment (MPCA, 2017). The question is: What effect does road runoff and rainfall have on Spring Creek`s water quality? The hypothesis is: If there is road runoff and rainfall increases, then Spring Creek’s water quality will be negatively affected. Water quality sampling (water temperature, pH, oxygen, conductivity, and turbidity) was done three different days on Spring Creek. Kick net sampling was done to determine organic pollution. All samples were taken from a run, riffle, and pool. The original hypothesis was if water quality is tested before and after road runoff, and rainfall is increased, then water quality will be affected by the runoff.

Screen Time: What effect does electronic device use have on attention, sleep, mood, vision and decision making?

Merissa W

Research shows that constant close up use of electronic devices and increased screen time can affect middle school student health, mood and even possibly vision (Nordqvist, 2017). The question is: What effect does electronic device use have on attention, sleep, mood, and decision making? The hypothesis is: If the amount of electronic device time is monitored for middle school students, then the more the screen time a student has, attention, sleep, mood, vision and decision making will be negatively affected.

Slimy Chemicals: What effect does the amount of glue have on slime properties?

Vivian M, Jordis S

Slime is a fun stress relieving material. Adding glue to a water/borax solution causes a chemical reaction between the glue molecules polyinylacete and the borax molecules to produce a highly flexible cross-linked polymers (Louisiana University, 2018). The question is: What effect does the amount of glue have on slime properties? The hypothesis is: If the amount of glue is changed, then slime properties will vary. To start the experiment a recipe to make slime was found and the amount of glue used was varied. Results pending.

Solar clock: What effect does gender have on the response time to sunlight?

Ava B, Brianna C

Circadian clock cells in the monarch butterfly's brain creates a sun compass to orientate butterfly migration to Mexico, where they spend the winter (University of Massachusetts, 2007). The question is: What effect does gender have on the response time to sunlight? The hypothesis is: If butterfly gender is evaluated, then females will fly faster than males. Ten female and male butterflies were released three meters from a window on a sunny day. The time it took the butterflies to reach the window was recorded. The average time to fly to the window was calculated and a bar graph was used to compare the times. Results pending.

What effect does tannic acid have on duckweed (Lemna minor) while under stress of motor oil?

Emily S

Duckweed grows quickly and is an important food source for fish (Fertig, 2017). The question was: What effect does tannic acid have on duckweed (Lemna minor) while under stress of motor oil? The hypothesis was: If the duckweed (Lemna minor) is grown in Lake Superior water with extra tannic acid, duckweed growth will be positively affected when compared to the Lake Superior control without tannic acid. Five sets of five clear plastic trial cups were filled with Lake Superior and a second set of five with St. Louis River water all contaminated with dilutions of motor oil (0.0, 0.0125, 0.00625, and 0.003125 mg/L). Three more sets of each concentration of motor oil and Lake Superior water were mixed with three different concentrations of tannic acid.

Wonderous Egg: What effect do egg whites vs. yolks and an egg substitute (buttermilk) have on cupcake taste and texture?

Taylor W, Melaina L

The egg is quite possibly the most versatile basic baking ingredient on the planet. I think it has to do with its having two parts: a fatty yolk and a protein, watery white (Fields, 2018). The question is: What effect do egg whites vs. yolks and an egg substitute (buttermilk) have on cupcake taste and texture? The hypothesis: If the type of egg (yolk, white and substitute) are varied, then cupcake texture and taste will be affected. Three sets of three dozen cupcakes were made and the type of eggs used was varied. Middle school students taste tested and reported on the texture.
